Red Sox v2008 half-way there

Posted in Sports by John Gregory on 11-Jul-2008

The Red Sox managed to record a 49-32 win-loss record through the first half of the 2008 season (eighty-one games); this compares favorably to 2007 (50-31).  On the downside, they had a ten and one-half game lead in 2007 at the half-way point as compared to only a half game this year.  They have some key players on the injured list (Ortiz and Schilling).  We watch as much of every game as we can.

We had a great time in mid-May attending an Oriole-Red Sox game at Camden Yards in Baltimore; Sox ace Beckett looked mediocre in a 5-3 or 5-2 loss.  We saw Ramirez, with the bases loaded, ground out in a 1-2-3 double-play to end one rally.

Since late June, when they played their 81st game, things have not gone well.  The Tampa Bay team has been playing inspired baseball and passed the Sox into first during the first days of July; this included a three-game sweep of the Sox while playing in Tampa.  Once the Sox have returned home and Tampa went on the road, the Sox have crept back to a 2 game deficit.

Eating lobsters is good but killing them badly is bad

Posted in Explorations by John Gregory on 3-Jul-2008

Being a resident of Maine and fond of eating lobsters, I found this latest blather about humanely killing lobsters before eating them as pretty idiotic: Back story: Shell shock in the NY Times magazine.  I think you either believe they have constitutional rights and should be treated as full citizens (and never eaten) or you consider them good food (and how you kill them is irrelevant); believing they are good food requiring protection from cruel and unusual death suggests someone with some crossed wires or synapses somewhere.
